Vaginal Rejuvenation Description

Women may seek vaginal rejuvenation surgery for a number of cosmetic and functional reasons.  Perhaps large or misshapen labia (lips surrounding the vagina) are causing embarrassment or pain and discomfort during sexual intercourse or exercise.  Perhaps the vagina has loosened as a result of childbirth or the natural aging process.  Loss of muscle tone and stretching in the vagina can reduce sexual sensation because friction is decreased for both the woman and her partner.  Vaginal rejuvenation surgery can help improve both the appearance and the function of the vagina.  Vaginal rejuvenation can help reduce and reshape the labia, tighten vaginal muscles and tissue, and uncover a hooded clitoris.

Although the use of lasers for vaginal rejuvenation is popular with some doctors, at The Bassin Center For Plastic Surgery, we do not use lasers for vaginal rejuvenation because of the risk of permanent removal and reduction of sensitive and crucial tissue in the vaginal area, which can be burned away inadvertently by a laser.  Unfortunately, we’ve seen many patients seeking our help to fix a laser labiaplasty that was performed improperly at another practice.   We believe that the scalpel provides much more precision and control in the labiaplasty procedure.

Vaginal Rejuvenation Procedure

Depending on your specific condition, the vaginal rejuvenation procedure may include removing excess vaginal tissue, reinforcing muscle and supportive tissue in the vaginal walls, shortening and reshaping the labia, and tightening the vaginal opening.  Anesthesia needs and recovery time will vary depending on the extent of your surgery.  Your doctor will discuss specific post-operative instructions with you, including how quickly you can return to work and normal activities, as well as how long you need to abstain from sexual intercourse and tampon use. A post-operative appointment is usually scheduled for one week after surgery.
