LABIAPLASTY

Labiaplasty Description

Labiaplasty is genital surgery to reduce or reshape the labia minora (the inner lips).  For some women, large or misshapen labia can cause pain during intercourse, as well as discomfort during exercise or when wearing tight-fitting pants. Other women may feel self-conscious about the appearance of the labia.  Women may be born with large labia, or may develop large labia due to excessive weight gain and loss, after an injury, during childbirth, after surgery, or as part of their normal aging process.  Whatever the reason, more and more women are choosing to correct this condition with surgery.  Labiaplasty may alleviate pain and discomfort, improve self-confidence and body image, and even enhance sexual experience by reducing labia that cover the clitoris.  Your doctor will meet with you to assess your condition and answer all of your questions prior to surgery.

Labiaplasty Procedure

During this procedure, the doctor will use special surgical instruments to shorten and reshape the labia.  Labiaplasty is usually performed in a hospital or outpatient surgical facility, with most patients able to return home the same day.  In most cases only local anesthesia is required.  Genitals are usually tender and mildly swollen for several weeks after surgery.  Patients are instructed to abstain from sexual intercourse for 4 weeks and refrain from using tampons for 10 days following surgery.  A sanitary pad is usually necessary during the first week.  Though you will be encouraged to move around the same day of your surgery, strenuous activity should be avoided for the first 3 weeks.  Stitches will dissolve on their own, and a post-operative appointment is usually scheduled for one week following surgery.
