BROW LIFT / FOREHEAD LIFT

Brow Lift Description

Just like other areas of the body, the area around our eyebrows is subject to the cumulative effects of aging, gravity and sun exposure.   As we age, the eyebrows lose their natural youthful arch, and the forehead develops frown lines and wrinkles.  While some people elect to use BOTOX® injections to fight these signs of aging, there are areas that BOTOX® cannot treat, such as deep wrinkling that can occur between the eyes, over the bridge of the nose.  In addition, some people don’t want to commit to the schedule of frequent maintenance treatments necessary to sustain the effects of BOTOX®.  For those people, a brow lift might be a good option.  A brow lift, commonly known as a forehead lift, is a surgical procedure to elevate and reshape the eyebrow area in order to bring about a more youthful appearance.  In the past, surgeons used the coronal brow lift surgery technique, in which a large incision was made across the hairline, from ear to ear.  Unfortunately, in addition to an unsightly scar, this procedure could cause unwanted side effects, such as hair loss or loss of sensation in the incision area.  Dr. Mendoza uses the most advanced brow lift techniques to minimize visible scarring and unwanted side effects.  Depending on your condition and anatomy, Dr. Mendoza will evaluate you to determine if you’re a good candidate for endoscopic brow lift, temporal brow lift, or internal brow lift.  These less invasive techniques can help minimize wrinkling above the nose, sagging in the brow area, frown lines in the forehead, and crow’s feet around the corners of the eyes.

Brow Lift Procedure

Dr. Mendoza uses several less invasive, state-of-the-art brow lift procedures to help soften expression lines in the forehead and elevate the brow into a more youthful position.  These techniques include:

Endoscopic Brow Lift

During an endoscopic brow lift, a series of small incisions are made just behind the hairline, and an endoscope and tiny camera are introduced.  Dr. Mendoza can access the area through a small incision and monitor the surgery on a video monitor.  During the procedure, Dr. Mendoza will elevate the skin and underlying tissues in the upper face, and may remove part of the muscles that cause frown lines and wrinkling in the forehead.  The surgery can be performed in our offices or in an outpatient surgical facility.  The procedure takes about an hour, and you can expect bruising and swelling for 3-5 days after surgery.  Staples are removed in about a week after surgery.  Dr. Mendoza will discuss specific post-operative instructions with you, but in general, most people can return to work in about 7-10 days after brow lift surgery.

Temporal Brow Lift

During the temporal brow lift procedure, two incisions are made just behind the hairline on either side of the forehead.  The deep temporal fascia is accessed and the temporal forehead is elevated, helping to raise and reshape the brow area and soften small wrinkles around the corners of the eyes.  The surgery can be performed in our offices or in an outpatient surgical facility.  The procedure takes about 45 minutes, and you can expect bruising and swelling for 3-5 days after surgery.  A pressure bandage is used on the forehead for the first two days after surgery.  Dr. Mendoza will discuss specific post-operative instructions with you, but in general, most people can return to work in about 7-10 days after brow lift surgery.  You’ll have follow-up visits with Dr. Mendoza after one week, and again after two weeks, at which time surgical staples will be removed.

Internal Brow Lift

During an internal brow lift, incisions are made in the natural crease of the upper eyelids, allowing access to the central and temporal eyebrow region.  Dr. Mendoza will elevate the eyelid muscles, fixing them in a more youthful arch.  The procedure is often combined with upper blepharoplasty, which can remove excess eyelid skin.  An internal brow lift can be performed in our offices or in an outpatient surgical facility.   The procedure usually takes about 30 minutes to complete.  You can expect bruising and swelling for about 4-6 days.  Sutures will dissolve in 3-5 days, and Dr. Mendoza will see you in the office for follow-up in about a week.  Dr. Mendoza will discuss specific post-operative instructions with you, but in general, most people can return to work in 7-10 days after brow lift surgery.
