For some women, overly large and heavy breasts may cause both physical and emotional problems. In addition to negatively affecting self-esteem, heavy, drooping breasts can create physical strain on the body. Women may experience back and neck pain, shoulder soreness from bra strap grooving, and skin rashes underneath the breasts. Reduction Mammoplasty, commonly known as breast reduction surgery, can help relieve many of these physical symptoms by removing fat, tissue and skin to reduce the size and weight of breasts, while lifting and reshaping breasts for a more balanced and proportional figure. During breast reduction surgery, nipples may also be moved to a more normal position. In certain cases, insurance will cover breast reduction surgery. Breast reduction can also be accomplished for women who are seeking only a small decrease in breast size or who wish to avoid the scars associated with traditional breast reduction surgery. For those women, AQUALIPO®, a groundbreaking liposuction technique, can decrease breast size to some degree while offering many benefits. With AQUALIPO®, there’s less bruising and swelling, lower medical risk, and virtually no patient downtime. Your doctor will discuss with you whether you are a good candidate for traditional breast reduction surgery or breast reduction with AQUALIPO®.
This procedure will vary depending on whether you are having traditional breast reduction surgery or breast reduction with AQUALIPO®. During traditional breast reduction surgery, three incisions will typically be made: one around the areola (the darker skin surrounding the nipple), another from the areola down to the bottom of the breast, and a third following the natural crease between the breast and chest. Certain women may be candidates for a short-scar procedure that can reduce the number of incisions necessary. After making incisions, the doctor will remove excess fat, tissue and skin, while elevating the nipple to a more natural position. At this time, the areola may also be reduced in size. Breast reduction surgery is usually performed in a hospital or outpatient surgical facility, with the patient under general anesthesia. Most patients can return home the same day or 1 day following surgery and can resume work within several weeks. While your breasts are healing, you will have to sleep on your back and avoid strenuous activity, usually for about 4 to 6 weeks. There may be some temporary loss of sensation in the nipple area, which usually returns to normal within several months to a year after surgery. It may also take several months before your breasts settle into their final shape. Your surgeon will discuss specific post-operative instructions with you, including wound care, pain management, and post-surgical bra support. Any surgical drains will be removed within a day or two after surgery, and a post-operative appointment is usually scheduled for one week following surgery.
For women having breast reduction with AQUALIPO®, the procedure will be different. With the AQUALIPO® procedure, the doctor needs to make only a tiny incision in order to access the fat layer, so scarring is virtually eliminated. The doctor will use a concentrated jet of water to gently flush the fat from your body. With AQUALIPO®, there’s no need for general anesthesia, so patients are typically discharged within 15 minutes after the procedure. Because the AQUALIPO® procedure is so gentle, patients are able to return to work and normal activities immediately after the procedure.
